Your first visit

Ninety unhurried minutes.

No one is rushed through Pearl. Here is how a first appointment unfolds, start to finish.

  1. A conversation, not a chair

We begin in the lounge with tea or sparkling water. Dr. Reed asks what brings you in, what has gone well or badly before, and what would make today easy.

    About 15 minutes
  2. A gentle, thorough look

Photographs, low-dose digital x-rays, a gum health check, and an oral cancer screening. You watch everything on the screen, and we pause whenever you like.

    About 45 minutes
  3. Your plan, in plain words

Options, not orders. You leave with a written plan, exact fees from our treatment menu, and the freedom to think it over. Most patients also have their cleaning today.

The Pearl approach

Dentistry with a human touch.

We believe a good dental visit begins with feeling at ease. Our team explains each step, welcomes your questions, and helps you make informed choices about your smile. Two operatories, one dentist, and never more than one patient in the chair at a time.

The comfort menu

Ask for anything. It's complimentary.

Small things change how a visit feels. Choose from the menu when you arrive, or just tell us what would help.

Noise-cancelling headphones

With your own playlist or one of ours. You will not hear the drill; you will hear Nina Simone.

Warm lavender towels

Before and after your appointment, straight from the warmer.

Weighted blanket

A soft, heavy linen blanket that makes the chair feel more like a sofa.

Sedation options

Nitrous oxide for any visit, oral sedation for longer ones. Discussed openly, never pushed.

Ask Dr. Reed

Pause signal

Raise your left hand and everything stops. No explanations needed, as many times as you like.

Sunglasses & lip balm

Soft light in your eyes, nothing dry on your lips. Little details, remembered every time.

Meet your dentist

Dr. Julian Reed

Doctor of Dental Medicine · Founder of Pearl

Julian opened Pearl in 2019 after a decade in high-volume practices, where he saw good clinicians run out of time for the one thing that makes dentistry work: trust. He designed the studio around a single question, "what would I want for my own family?", and kept the schedule light enough to answer it.

He trained at the OHSU School of Dentistry and completed advanced residencies in ceramic restoration and sedation. Outside the studio he bakes sourdough, rows on the Willamette at sunrise, and is slowly learning to throw pottery, badly.

Questions, answered

Things people ask before they visit.

I haven't been to a dentist in years. Will you judge me?

No. Roughly half of our new patients say exactly this in the lounge, and it is one of the reasons Pearl exists. We start with a conversation, we go at your pace, and nothing about your history changes how we treat you.

Do you take my insurance?

We are in-network with most PPO plans, including Delta Dental, MetLife, Cigna, Aetna, Guardian and Regence, and we file claims for any PPO. We do not accept HMO or DMO plans. Send us a photo of your card and we will check your benefits before your first visit.

Is sedation available?

Yes. Nitrous oxide is available for any appointment at no charge for members, and oral sedation can be arranged for longer treatment visits. Dr. Reed will talk through what suits you during your first conversation.

How long is a first visit, and will I get a cleaning?

Plan for about ninety minutes. Most patients have their cleaning the same day; if your gums need a deeper clean, we will explain why and schedule it separately so nothing feels rushed.

Do you see children?

We do, from age three. Little ones are welcome to ride in the chair, hold the mirror, and leave with a tooth stamp. Family appointments can be booked back to back.
